The E6 expansion project involves a 110-kilometre stretch of motorway from Gardermoen to Biri and the project will be divided into five phases.
In phase 1, the partial stretches from Hovinmoen to Dal and from Skaberud to Kolomoen will be built. Hovinmoen-Dal is roughly 10.1 kilometres long and the stretch from Skaberud-Kolomoen is approximately 12.7 kilometres long. Construction began in December 2007 and these roads will open in November 2009.
During phase 2 the 19-kilometre stretch from Dal to Minnesund will be transformed into a four-lane road. The two-kilometre stretches from Labbdalen to Skaberud will also be built in phase 2. Construction of these two stretches is expected to commence in 2009-2011.
The 22-kilometre stretch from Minnesund to Labbdalen will be constructed during phase 3. Expansion into a four-lane highway on this stretch is planned for 2011 to 2013.
During phase 4 of the project, a 43-kilometre stretch from Kolomoen to Moelv will be transformed into a four-lane highway. Phase 5 involves the expansion of a five-kilometre long stretch of motorway from Moelv to Biri, which includes the bridge at the Lake Mjøsa. Funding for this phase has yet to be secured, although if the Norwegian Parliament goes ahead with an anticipated 20 percent increase in funds appropriated to the Norwegian National Transport Plan (NTP), construction could potentially begin as early as 2013-2015.
