Goals

Improved traffic flow

The E6, between Gardermoen and Biri, has been a two-lane motorway since 1994, however traffic volumes have significantly increased since this time and even doubled in some areas. Heavier traffic volumes have resulted in longer and more unpredictable travel times going northbound from Gardermoen.

Expansion of the E6 into a four-lane highway will more than double the traffic capacity, while ensuring there is sufficient capacity in the future and making current travel times more predictable.

Improved road safety

The Gardermoen to Biri stretch presently has a high accident rate, with accident sites equally distributed along the entire stretch of motorway.

Since January 1994:

  • There have been more than 700 accidents involving injuries
  • More than 100 fatal accidents
  • More than 200 severe injuries
  • Accidents involving personal injury on this stretch of road cost Norwegian society around NOK 280 million per year

Transforming the existing two-lane motorway into a four-lane highway will significantly contribute to lowering the number of accidents between Gardermoen and Biri and reduce fatalities by up to 80 percent. The addition of a safety zone in both directions will cut down the number of accidents involving injuries occurring when motorists exit the carriageway.

Development and progress in Hedmark and Oppland

The E6, from Gardermoen to Biri, is the most important road connecting Hedmark/Oppland and Gardermoen/Oslo. Expansion into a four-lane highway will help boost local industry, increase jobs and help attract new residents to the Hedmark and Oppland regions.
