If you have a valid driving licence, you do not need to exchange it in order to continue driving in Norway
A driving licence has generally the same validity in Norway as in the country of issue. However, you are subject to the Norwegian health requirements and to the validity period for driving licence categories in Norway.
For this reason you should contact a traffic service office to find out exactly what driving entitlements you have. The alternative to retaining your current driving licence is to exchange it for a Norwegian driving licence.
Prior to 10 September 2008, driving licences in the heavy categories (Categories C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE) were valid for 10 years from the date of registration of residence in Norway, but the validity period of the foreign driving licence could not be exceeded. Today the validity period is 5 years, but for a transitional period this may be somewhat longer if you took up permanent residence in Norway before 10 September 2008. When you renew your foreign driving licence, you must present a satisfactory medical certificate; your driving licence will then be valid for 5 years.
If you apply to exchange your foreign driving licence for these heavy categories more than one year after its expiry date, you must pass a practical driving test before you can be issued with a Norwegian driving licence for the corresponding categories.
Your foreign driving licence will then be returned to the country of issue with the information that you have been issued with a Norwegian driving licence.
