Registering change of ownership
When a vehicle changes hands, the change of ownership must be registered at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. This can be done by going to one of these offices in person, or the papers can be sent by post.
When the notification of sale has been submitted and registered, the buyer (the new owner) listed on the notification of sale will receive the invoice for the annual motor vehicle tax, toll road charges and any penalties/fines. If the NPRA does not receive a correctly completed notification of sale, the seller (the former owner) will continue receiving such claims, even if the vehicle is no longer in his or her possession. The personal information for both the buyer and the seller must be correctly entered, as any incorrect information will prevent the change of ownership from being registered.
The seller’s responsibilities:
If you have lost Part 2 of the vehicle registration certificate, download and complete the notification of lost or stolen vehicle registration certificate and send it to a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office .
The buyer’s responsibilities:
If the deadline for the periodic technical inspection (also known as EU inspection) has expired before the change of ownership is registered, this inspection must also be carried out.
