Tyres and chains

You as the driver are responsible for assessing whether the vehicle you are driving has sufficient grip on the road surface. On slippery surfaces sufficient traction can be ensured by using studded or non-studded winter tyres, snow chains or similar devices.

The use of studded tyres or chains is not permitted
- from the second Monday after Easter Sunday
- up to and including 31 October

In Nordland, Troms and Finnmark counties, this period lasts from 1 May up to and including 15 October.

There are no limitations on the use of non-studded winter tyres.

You are allowed to use studded tyres or chains outside these dates if the road conditions require extra grip. The need for sufficient traction outweighs the deadlines set for using studded tyres and chains. You as the driver must assess the existing conditions.

Tyre requirements on winter roads

  • The tread depth must be a minimum of 3 mm regardless of the type of tyre.
  • Studs may be used only on winter tyres (except for motorcycles).
  • If a vehicle up to and including 3 500 kg is fitted with studded tyres, you must have studded tyres on all wheels.

Outside the winter season the minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm.

Advice and recommendations

  • Summer tyres with a tread depth of less than 3 mm are not to be used on winter roads.
  • Studded tyres are not required during the winter season.
  • Non-studded winter tyres have poorer performance properties on wet asphalt than summer tyres do.
