If you submit a health certificate, the validity of the heavy categories will be five years from the date when the health certificate was issued.

Before 10 September 2008, driving entitlements for heavy vehicle categories were valid for 10 years from the date the holder took up permanent residence in Norway. If you took up permanent residence in Norway before 10 September 2008, your driving licence may be valid for more than five years, depending on the date when you took up permanent residence.

You have to submit a health certificate from a doctor if you

  • apply for an exchange of heavy vehicle categories after the foreign driving entitlement for heavy vehicle categories has expired
  • apply for an exchange of heavy vehicle categories after you have had permanent residence in Norway for more than five years

You have to submit a health certificate from a doctor and pass the practical driving test if you

  • apply for an exchange of heavy vehicle categories more than one year after the foreign driving entitlement for heavy categories has expired
  • apply for an exchange of heavy vehicle categories more than one year after you have had permanent residence in Norway for five years.
