For drivers in their trial period for a Category B licence, penalty points will be doubled for each offence committed during the trial period.
- Eight penalty points in the course of three years = lose the right to drive a motor vehicle for six months
- If you are stopped for several offences at the same time, the penalty points for each offence will be added up and you receive the sum total.
- You will receive a written warning when you have accumulated four penalty points
How do you get penalty points?
The police stop you for an offence that carries penalty points, or you are registered by speed cameras (automatic speed enforcement). You accept an on-the-spot fine or an ordinary fine, or you take the case to court (the District Court). The penalty points will thus result from a final court decision (i.e. a final and enforceable judgment), an accepted on-the-spot fine, or an accepted ordinary fine. You do not have the right to appeal against the registration of penalty points.
When are penalty points removed from your driving record?
Penalty points are deleted three years after the date on which you signed the fine, or three years after the final court decision.
When you regain your driving entitlements, the penalty points that led to the loss of driving entitlements will be deleted.
The penalty point scheme
The penalty point scheme was introduced on 1 January 2004. The aim of the penalty points scheme is to ensure that drivers comply with the traffic rules and show consideration for other road users. The scheme is intended to promote increased safety and to reduce the number of people who are killed or injured on Norwegian roads.
