A Category AM driving licence entitles you to drive a moped with two, three or four wheels. Your driving entitlement may be restricted by a code.

You must be at least 16 years old to get a Category AM driving licence.

It is not legal to drive a moped without a moped driving permit or driving licence that entitles you to drive a moped.

Information about the moped, such as its unladen weight and vehicle type, can be found in the Vehicle Registration Certificate.

Moped

You can drive a moped with two, three or four wheels. What type you can drive depends on whether there is a code entered next to Category AM in your driving licence, or if you have a moped driving permit. Moped driving permits were issued until 2005.

You cannot tow a trailer with a moped.

A moped must not be able to run faster than 45 km/h.

With code 145 or 146 or a moped driving permit

You can ride a moped with two wheels.

You can drive a moped with three or four wheels if its unladen weight is no more than 150 kg. If the moped is electrically powered, the batteries should not be included in the moped’s unladen weight.

  • A Category A1 driving licence is also valid for Category AM 146.
  • With a moped driving permit, your driving entitlement is only valid in Norway. You can drive in other countries if you exchange your moped driving permit for a driving licence for Category AM 146.

To exchange your moped driving permit with Category AM 146, you must fill out an application form on paper and send it to your local Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon).

If you were born before 1985

You can get a driving licence for Category AM 145 without training or a test.

With code 147 (Category AM 147)

You can drive a moped with three or four wheels regardless of its unladen weight.

With Category AM without a code

You can drive any type of moped with two, three or four wheels.

You will have Category AM

  • if you get a Category A1 driving licence and have reached the age of 18
  • if you get a driving licence for Category A, A2 or B
  • if you get a driving licence for both Categories AM 146 and AM 147

Moped car

You can drive a moped car if you have code 147. See information under Moped.

A moped car looks like a regular car. It has a vehicle body, a steering wheel and pedals, but is registered as a moped.

ATV

You can drive an ATV that is registered as a moped. The same rules then apply as for mopeds.
