The length of validity of your new licence will be based on your health certificate.
If your health is good enough - your doctor will give you a health certificate that is valid for up to 3 years.
When you have turned 77, you can renew your driving licence with a validity beyond 80, provided that your health certificate is also issued after you turn 77. This means that if, for example, you renew your licence with a health certificate when you are 78, and the health certificate is issued with a three-year validity, your licence will be valid until you are 81.
If you have renewed your licence with a health certificate before you have turned 80, and already have a validity beyond the day you turn 80, the expiry date on the back of your licence will tell you when it is time for renewal with a new health certificate.
You will receive notification three months before your driving entitlement (licence category) expires.
Are you between 75 and 80 years old?
Before 19 June 2019, renewing a driving licence required a health certificate from age 75, and the licence was valid for up to three years. If you renewed your driving licence before 19 June 2019, and your health certificate was issued with a validity of three years, you can renew your driving licence without a health certificate next time it needs renewal. The validity of your new driving licence will then expire the day before you turn 80. However, if your health certificate was issued with a validity of less than three years, you will have to renew your driving licence before your health certificate expires.
Licence that expires the day before you turn 75?
Before 19 June 2019, when you renewed your driving licence after turning 60 your licence would be valid until the day before you turned 75. If you hold a driving licence that expires on the day before you turn 75, you can renew it without a health certificate, and it will be valid until the day before you turn 80.
Remember that you should see a doctor if you are uncertain whether you meet the health criteria for driving licences.
Renewing online or at a DVLO
You can renew your driving licence and driving entitlements (licence categories) at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon/DVLO) or online on Your Page.
At later renewals the same process must be repeated, with a new health certificate (and eyesight certificate if applicable) and the new driving licence. You need to renew your driving licence before it expires in order to hold your driving entitlements without interruption.
Health issues and driving
Remember that you must not drive a vehicle while temporarily ill, suffering from poor health or when use of medication renders you incapable of driving safely. Your doctor is obligated to report to the county governor if you over an extended period of time (6 months or more) fail to satisfy the health requirements for a driving licence.
