First to arrive at the scene of an accident
If you are the first to arrive at an accident scene, you are obliged to help.
Put on a high visibility vest or other high visibility clothing before leaving your car. Notify 113 in cases of personal injury.
- Stop immediately if you are involved in the accident – regardless of blame.
- Secure the site: Use a reflective vest, put out a warning triangle, move vehicles if it is safe.
- Notify the emergency services (call 113) in cases of personal injury or serious accident. Trained personnel will provide guidance as to what you should do while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.
- Help injured people as far as you can.
- Do not leave the scene before the police arrive – unless it is absolutely necessary.
Hitting an animal
- A vehicle-animal collision is not a punishable offence, but it is an offence not to report it.
- Accidents should be reported to the police on 02800, who will notify the wildlife committee and other stakeholders.
- You should always adjust your speed when driving in areas with warning signs about animals on the road.
