From 15 June 2022, new and stricter rules for riding an electric scooter came into force.

New rules as of June 15, 2022

  • The general blood alcohol limit of 0.02 per cent also applies to driving under the influence with small electric vehicles.
  • The age limit for riding an electric scooter is 12 years old.
  • Children under the age of 15 are required to wear a helmet.
  • Small electric vehicles are reclassified from "bicycle" to "motor vehicle".

Liability insurance is required for both rental and privately owned bicycles

In addition, small electric vehicles will be covered by the Norwegian Automobile Liability Act and must have liability insurance. This change will apply from 1 September 2022 for rented vehicles and from 1 January 2023 for privately owned vehicles.

There are also other changes. Special traffic rules and traffic sign rules applies to small electric motor vehicles. With the exception of the rules mentioned above, they mainly correspond to the rules that currently apply to bicycles.
