Driving licences in Norway and abroad

Different rules apply for licences issued in EU/EEA countries and non-EU/EEA countries. The EEA driving licence models are valid in all EU/EEA countries.

  • Exchanging EU/EEA driving licences

You can exchange a licence issued in an EU/EEA country for a Norwegian driving licence for the corresponding category.

  • Exchange of driving licences from countries outside the EU/EEA

You can get a Norwegian driving licence if you hold a driving licence from one of the countries outside the EU/EEA that we are mentioning here.

  • Using an EU/EEA driving licence in Norway

You may drive in Norway if you hold a valid driving licence from another EU/EEA country. However, you are subject to Norwegian health requirements.

  • Using a non-EU/EEA driving licence in Norway

You can normally use your driving licence for three months from when you arrive in Norway. In some cases, you also need an international driving licence.

  • Norwegian driving licences abroad

Here you can see in what countries you can use your Norwegian driving licence.

  • Driving licences in Svalbard

Here you will find information about the rules applying to driving licences in Svalbard.
