E6 in Nordland closed from 2nd to 12th July
Travelling north of the Arctic Circle? Allow extra travel time and be prepared for a diversion.
European route E6 between Fauske and Rognan will be closed from Thursday 2nd July until Sunday 12th July due to road damage. To prevent the retaining wall beneath the road from collapsing, a temporary bridge will be installed at the site. During this period, the E6 will be completely closed.
If you are travelling from the south towards Fauske, Bodø, Lofoten or Narvik, you must follow the signed diversion via County Road 812 after passing the Arctic Circle and descending from Saltfjellet. Please follow the road signs carefully. You can drive to Rognan, but the E6 will be closed just north of the town and it will not be possible to continue further.
The diversion route is narrow and passes through mountain areas, farmland and small villages. The road is not designed for such high traffic volumes. Please allow plenty of extra travel time and show consideration for other road users. Also be aware of sheep that may be near the road. The diversion will add approximately one and a half hours to your journey.
When you reach Saltstraumen, you can continue on National Road 80 west towards Bodø and the ferry connections to Moskenes in Lofoten. If you are travelling further north, drive towards Fauske and rejoin the E6 there. From the E6 you can continue to destinations such as Hamarøy, where ferry connections are available to Svolvær, Lødingen and Bognes/Narvik.
If you plan to travel to Tromsø, North Cape or other destinations further north, you may prefer to drive through Sweden instead. This can be a good option if you are travelling with a caravan or motorhome, are not used to driving on narrow roads, or simply want the fastest route.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration apologises for the inconvenience caused by the closure of the E6. If everyone reduces their speed and shows consideration for one another, we can still enjoy a safe and pleasant holiday travelling in northern Norway.
