The first step of your driver training is covered by your training for Category B.
- With Code 96 in addition to Category B on your driving licence you are entitled to drive a car and trailer with a combined maximum authorised mass of 4 250 kg.
- You obtain a driving entitlement for Category B Code 96 by taking at least 7 hours of mandatory training without having to take a new practical driving test.

At this step you will learn the basic skills of driving and reversing with a trailer, coupling and uncoupling the trailer, and carrying out a safety check.
Training may take place at a driving school, with a lay instructor, or in a combination of the two. How many lessons you need will depend on your individual requirements and how much you practise with a lay instructor. It is important that you reach the goals for this step.
Mandatory end-of-step assessment
At the end of step 2 there is a mandatory assessment. Together, you and your instructor will assess whether you have the skills required to go to step 3.

At this step you will learn how to drive safely and independently with a car and trailer in varied traffic.
You will learn skills such as
- driving predictably, efficiently and economically
- assessing opportunities for turning around, ways of turning around, and the need for an assistant
How many lessons you need will depend on your individual requirements and how much you practise with a lay instructor. It is important that you reach the goals for this step.
Mandatory end-of-step assessment
At the end of step 3 there is a mandatory assessment. Together, you and your instructor will assess whether you have the skills required to go to step 4.

At this step you will develop your skills to a level where you can drive a car and trailer in a responsible manner and interact well with other road users.
Among other things you will learn to
- select low-risk ways to drive
- counteract the occurrence of traffic accidents
- be conscious of how you can improve as a driver also after receiving your driving licence
Mandatory course in load securing and load marking
This is a 2-hour course that will help you understand how important it is to secure and mark loads. You will also learn ways to secure the load effectively.
Mandatory safety course on the road
This is a 3-hour course. During the course you will develop your driving skills and reflect on your experiences of driving a car with a trailer.
