Trøndelag County Administration and the NPRA have agreed that the Fv 6854 is to be signposted with a total weight limit of 3.5 tonnes.

This was decided after carefully monitoring the traffic situation.

On Saturday morning, there was a quick clay landslide on the E6 by Nesvatnet in Levanger. The E6 is still closed and the area is an accident scene under police jurisdiction.

Ensuring traffic safety and accessibility for emergency services

The situation for County Road 6854 (Fv 6854) and other county diversion roads has been closely monitored after the landslide. For the Fv 6854, the speed limit has been reduced and traffic guards have been deployed to prevent vehicles over 15 metres from using this road as a diversion route after the quick clay landslide.  Now there is a need for further measures to ensure traffic safety and access for public transport, residents, and emergency services. The Fv 6854 is considered critically important for both emergency response vehicles and public transport.

Exceptions to the total weight limit of 3.5 tonnes:

  • Buses on scheduled service
  • Emergency response vehicles
  • Access to properties (residents along the road)

The goal is for a decision to put up signs to be formally adopted and signs to be installed as quickly as possible, but both Trøndelag County Administration and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) are strongly urging drivers to respect the new restrictions on the Fv 854 Gamle Kongeveg even now.

The NPRA has provided traffic directors to enforce the signage for the E6 and the Fv 6854 Gamle Kongeveg.

Trøndelag County Administration and the NPRA are working closely together, monitoring the situation and collaborating on plans and assessments for the regulation also of other diversion routes.

Started reinforcement projects on the Fv 6854

In addition, roadway edge reinforcement with crushed asphalt has already started on the Fv 6854, which will improve safety and traffic flow at meet situations.

Recommended diversion routes

These are the current recommendations for drivers (see also applicable road lists):

Long-distance transport / through traffic in northern Trøndelag:

  • The 755 via Fosen (NB! Straumbrua bridge has a weight limit of 50 tonnes) – green route.
  • The E14, the Lv 322 and the Fv 72 through Sweden - orange route.

Both routes are permitted for modular vehicle combinations types 1 and 2 subject to stricter turning radius requirements. Modular vehicle combinations are strongly urged to use these routes.

We are asking vehicles with a total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes to use the signposted diversion route for southbound and northbound traffic respectively (for more efficient traffic flow):

  •  Southbound direction: 753 / 6822 / 6818 between Åsen and Skogn, via Frosta – green route.
  • Northbound direction: 6852 / 6860 / 6854 / 6856 between Åsen and Ronglan, via Hoklingen – orange route.

Follow recommended diversion routes and drive with consideration

The NPRA and Trøndelag County Administration are strongly urging drivers to respect these driving patterns and comply with the signs. There is now heavy traffic on diversion roads that have not been designed for such traffic. Both NPRA Roadside Inspection and the Norwegian National Road Policing Service have a high presence on the diversion routes.

Clarifications from Norwegian Customs

Norwegian Customs emphasise the following about the rules that are in force:

It is permitted to cross the border into Sweden using the alternative route E14 Storlien and the Lv 322 / Fv 72 to Verdal, or the opposite direction, on the following conditions:

  • Permission is granted for the period 3 September – 1 October 2025 and applies to border crossing only on the above-mentioned route. The purpose of allowing border crossing is to facilitate the transport of Norwegian goods that cannot be transported along the E6 due to the landslide on the E6 in Levanger.
  • Transports must follow the specified route without deviation, and it is not permitted to load, unload or take breaks on Swedish territory.
  • It is not permitted to transport goods subject to import restrictions.

It is also emphasised that goods need not be declared at Storlien when passing through, but the rules mentioned above must be followed.

Bane NOR and the NPRA are preparing

The NPRA and BaneNor have been working closely together since the landslide and are planning safety measures, investigations, and stabilisation work when the police release the area.

BaneNor and the NPRA currently do not have access to the area. It is very uncertain how long the E6 will remain closed, but it may be for a long time.
