It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that children under 15 are properly secured. Proper securement is mandatory and saves lives.

Today, very few children die in car accidents in Norway. One reason for this is the strict rules for securing children in cars. Remember to use equipment that is appropriate for the child's height and weight. You need to install the equipment correctly and keep the belt tight and close to the body.

Some important main rules

  • A rear-facing seat is safest and should be used for as long as possible, preferably until the child is at least 4 years old. Children under 15 months must be seated facing the rear.
  • Children under 135 cm must always use an approved child seat that is appropriate for the child's height and weight. Children between 135 and 150 cm should use a child seat if there is one is available in the car.
  • Children under 140 cm should not sit in the front seat if the airbag cannot be deactivated.
  • It is forbidden and highly dangerous to place a rear-facing child seat in front of an active airbag.

Child seat safety tips

  • Always follow carefully the instructions for installing the seat.
  • Make sure the belt is tight and close to the body.
  • The back seat is the safest place for children.
  • Do not let children lean against doors with side airbags.
  • Replace the child seat if it has been in an accident – even if it looks fine.

Is your child seat approved?

All child seats used in Norway must be approved according to European standards. Look for an orange label with one of these certification marks: ECE R44.03, 44.04 or ECE R129 (i-Size).
