Submitting a health certificate or eyesight certificate
When you apply for a driving licence, you will be informed if you need to submit a health certificate or an eyesight certificate.
When do you need to submit a health certificate?
You always need to submit a health certificate if you are obtaining a driving licence for a heavy vehicle category for the first time. This applies to light lorries, lorries, minibuses, buses, and CPCs for emergency response. If you have submitted a health certificate previously and it is still valid for the category/CPC you are applying to upgrade to, you do not need to submit a new certificate.
For other vehicle categories, such as cars, motorcycles, or tractors, you will need to submit a health certificate if you answer «Yes» to any of the health-related questions in the driving licence application. Check with your regular doctor if you are uncertain.
How to submit a health certificate
Book an appointment with your doctor for a health examination. During the examination, you and the doctor will go through the same health-related questions that you answered when you applied for a driving licence.
Some doctors are able to send us the health certificate digitally. If your doctor does not have this option, you must send or deliver the original certificate to your local Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. You need to book an appointment before you go to a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
When do you need to submit an eyesight certificate?
You need to submit an eyesight certificate if you answer «Yes» to any of the questions regarding vision in the driving licence application. This applies to you if you have impaired vision or other vision problems that require you to see an optometrist or ophthalmologist (eye specialist). The certificate is titled «Helseattest førerett – syn».
How to submit an eyesight certificate
Book an appointment with an authorised optometrist or ophthalmologist. After the examination, the optometrist or ophthalmologist can send your vision certificate digitally to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. Usually, you will not need to take any other action yourself.
Submit the certificate in good time
Your certificate must be registered with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration before you or your driving school can book a practical driving test. Therefore, you should submit the certificate well in advance.
For categories that do not require a practical test, such as mopeds and snowmobiles, your certificate must be submitted before you take the theory test.
Your health certificate or eyesight certificate must not be older than three months when we receive it.
You will be notified when your certificate has been registered
You will be notified by SMS and email when your health certificate or eyesight certificate has been registered with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. You can also view the status for your applications on «Your Page».
