If you wish to keep your driving licence after you have turned 80, you need to submit a health certificate from your doctor.

How to renew your driving licence with a health certificate

Obtain a new health certificate from a doctor

You need to submit a valid health certificate – and, if applicable, an eyesight certificate – before you can renew your driving licence. You can obtain these certificates from a doctor, government-approved optometrist or ophthalmologist (eye specialist).

Send or hand in the original version of your new health certificate to a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office

We need the original version of your health certificate. It must not be more than three months old when we receive it.

Ask your regular doctor if (s)he can send your health certificate digitally to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. Your certificate will then be registered here as soon as the doctor has sent it.

If your doctor is unable to do so, you can send your health certificate by post to your nearest Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon)

You can also hand it in there yourself. Book an appointment for handing in your health certificate yourself to avoid waiting at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.

Wait for confirmation from us that your health certificate has been registered

It may take up to a week from the time we receive your health certificate, before it is registered in our systems.

You will receive confirmation by SMS and email once we have registered your certificate. You can also see on Your Page that it has been registered.

The term of validity of your new driving licence will be based on the date when your health certificate was issued.

Renew your driving licence on Your Page

Once you have been informed that your health certificate has been registered, you can renew your driving licence in our online facility on Your Page.

Renew your driving licence (log in)

You can also do this at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. Book an appointment to renew your driving licence at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office, to avoid having to wait in line.

Destroy or hand in your old driving licence

Your old driving licence becomes invalid when you order a new driving licence. When you renew your driving licence online, you are responsible for destroying your old driving licence.

You can also hand it in to a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. Book an appointment for handing it in to a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office to avoid having to wait in line.

Get a temporary driving permit

If you have a digital driving licence, the app will display a temporary driving permit when you have ordered a renewed driving licence.

If you do not have a digital driving licence, you can get a temporary driving permit this way:

  • If you renew your licence online, you can print out a temporary permit when you have paid for your new licence.
  • If you renew your licence at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office, you will be given a temporary permit when you have paid for your new licence.

The temporary driving permit is only valid in Norway.

Remember that you must not drive a vehicle while temporarily ill, suffering from poor health or when the use of medication renders you incapable of driving safely. If you are uncertain whether you meet the health requirements, ask your doctor if you need a health certificate even if you have not reached the age of 80.

Your doctor is obligated to report to the county governor if you over an extended period of time (6 months or more) fail to satisfy the health requirements for a driving licence.

Is your driving licence valid until you turn 75?

If your driving licence is valid until you turn 75 and you still want to keep your driving entitlement, you need to renew your driving licence. You do not need to submit a health certificate.

If the photo on your driving licence was taken in 2012 or later, you can renew your driving licence on Your Page.

If your photo was taken before 2012, you need to visit a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon) to take a new photo before you renew your driving licence. Once the photo has been taken, you can choose whether you wish to renew your licence at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office or online on Your Page.

Did you renew your driving licence with a health certificate before 19 June 2019?

Before 19 June 2019, everyone had to renew their driving licences with a health certificate from the age of 75. If you did this and your driving licence expires before you turn 80, it is the term of validity of your health certificate that determines the process for renewal of your driving licence.

If you got a health certificate with a three-year term of validity

If your doctor gave you a health certificate with a regular three-year validity, you can renew your driving licence with or without a new health certificate.

  • If you renew you licence without a health certificate, your new driving licence will be valid until the day before you turn 80.
  • If you renew you licence with a new health certificate, your new driving licence will have the same term of validity as the health certificate, usually three years.

If you got a health certificate with a validity period of less than three years

If your health certificate was issued with a validity of less than three years, you will have to submit a new health certificate in order to renew your driving licence when it expires.

Is your driving licence still valid after you turn 80?

If you renewed your driving licence with a health certificate when you turned 80, the expiry date entered on your driving licence applies.

When your licence expires, you will need to renew it with a new health certificate from your doctor.
