Norwegian Public Roads Administration projects

What is happening?

From autumn 2026, driving between eastern and western Norway will become more challenging. It will be particularly challenging on the E16 between Lærdal and Bergen, as there will be several simultaneous major construction works on the road in the years to come.

To ensure safe and predictable travel for all road users, we must maintain and upgrade the road network. Unfortunately, it is impossible to carry out roadworks without creating some challenges for road users.

How does it affect you?

  • Between autumn 2026 and autumn 2028, the Lærdal Tunnel will be closed to traffic between the hours of 18:00 and 06:00. From autumn 2028, and for the next two years, traffic signal control will be used through the tunnel between 18:00 and 06:00.
  • Between Arna and Stanghelle, there will be roadworks at Romslo, Trengereid, Langhellevegen, Gamle Fossen and Dalehagen. This will require temporary diversions and convoys.
  • Work is underway to improve the road between Åsbrekkegjelet and Skromle bridge, south of Vinje. Currently, this section has traffic signal control, but the road should be completed during autumn 2026.
  • The Norwegian Roads Administration will also carry out routine maintenance, such as  tunnel cleaning, between Bergen and Lærdal. These temporary activities will take place at night but may result in diversions or convoys.

These projects in eastern and western Norway will also affect traffic flow:

  • Fodnes Tunnel between Lærdal and the Mannheller-Fodnes ferry connection is undergoing maintenance work. There is currently a convoy system through the tunnel. The work is due to be completed in the new year.
  • On national road 52 in Hemsedal, the road will be improved at two locations to remove bottlenecks and improve traffic flow. The road may be closed for up to 30 minutes due to blasting.
  • In Flå municipality in Hallingdal on national road 7, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration will be improving the road at several points. The road may be closed for up to 20 minutes due to blasting.

What can you do?

We recommend planning your journey if you intend to drive between eastern and western Norway, particularly on the E16 between Bergen and Lærdal. Check Road and traffic information or the Norwegian Road Administration's traffic app before you travel. Enter your destination and departure time to get a recommended route based on updated information from the construction sites. You can also set up alerts in the app for different locations and routes for a status of the road conditions.

Visit Road and traffic information or download the Vegvesen trafikk app from App Store or Google Play, and change the settings (innstillinger) to English.

We recommend that you travel during daytime, and consider using alternative routes.

Planning your trip

At Road and traffic information you can search your route and check the relevant traffic reports. You can also plan your trip in advance and have your itinerary adjusted based on the traffic reports.

In the Norwegian Road Administration's traffic app, you can enter alerts for current locations and tunnels, and receive notifications if the traffic situation changes. You can also check the status of mountain passes and weather-exposed roads.
