Book a vehicle test

Vehicles may be found to have defects or deficiencies at a roadworthiness test, which means that they must be re-tested by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. For example, it could be that your vehicle has not been modified in accordance with the right specifications or that you have installed equipment on the vehicle that is not approved.
The main rule is that the vehicle must then be presented at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon).

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration does not carry out repairs, but checks and approves/adjusts information within these categories:

• First-time approval — the vehicle is not registered in Norway
• Alteration — approval of vehicle modifications
• Additional approval
• Correction — changes to technical information or status
• Administrative test— test of technical condition
• Extensive alterations

The price of a vehicle test varies depending on the type of test. You will be informed of the price of the test when you book the test session.

You can pay for the vehicle test at the time of booking or within three business days to keep your booking. Log in to Your Page, go to "Vehicle test", and choose "Your vehicle test sessions". You can pay by Visa debit card, Mastercard debit card, credit card, BankAxess or Vipps.

You can also pay for the vehicle test at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. Tp avoid waiting time, book an appointment if you wish to pay at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.

At the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office you pay using a Norwegian bank card or Mastercard (contactless or with a PIN code), using a mobile phone or smartwatch for contactless payment or in cash. You cannot pay by Vipps.

Please remember to bring the required documentation for the vehicle test. The requirement for documentation varies for the different vehicle tests. You will be informed what kind of documentation you need to bring to the vehicle test when you book a test session.

As from Monday 24 April 2023, imported vehicles are required to be cleared through customs before they can be approved. This means that all bookings for an imported vehicle must have customs clearance.

This requirement is now enforced at the time of booking, because the booking represents an application for approval. This is done as part of an ongoing effort to make case processing more efficient. Another advantage of this requirement is that it provides equal opportunity for all customers to obtain a session for technical approval of their imported vehicle.

From before there was already a requirement that the vehicle in the booking must be the same as the one to be approved. However, some customers have made bookings for fictitious vehicles to ensure themselves an available test session for a potential future need. This has given some people an unfair advantage in the queue for approval.

Therefore, all bookings without customs clearance for imported vehicles will be cancelled after 31 May 2023. If you have made such a booking, you will receive an SMS notification and you can switch test bookings between vehicles or cancel your booking. If you cancel within the deadline (second-last business day before the day of the test), you can have the paid test fee refunded.

You can book several types of tests to be performed during the same visit, but be aware that different types of tests require different expertise from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. Therefore, it can be difficult to find an available session if the session contains many different types of tests.
You can have some tests performed at the same time for some combinations of towing vehicle and trailer. This requires that both vehicles need the same test, for example first-time approval or annual test of additional approval for ADR.

You can change your booking to a different day or different place, but no later than 18 hours before your booked session begins. If you have booked multiple identical test sessions for different vehicles of the same type, you can also switch vehicles among the sessions.

You can cancel a vehicle test online. If you have already paid for the vehicle test you wish to cancel, you can request a refund. In order to receive a refund for the test fee, you must cancel the test no later than one business day before the date of the test session and you must send us a written request through our contact form (Norwegian only). In the field where you are asked to describe your enquiry, you should write that you wish to have your vehicle test fee refunded, and state your date of birth or organisation number (depending on whether you paid privately or as a business), and bank account number.

If you have paid online, please enclose a copy of the receipt you received under "Messages" and quote the reference number. If you have paid at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office, please enclose a copy of the receipt you received when you paid.

Sometimes test sessions may be cancelled by us due to unforeseen circumstances at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. If this happens, you will receive an SMS explaining this and directing you to the facility where you can book a new session online. If you have already paid for the appointment, you do not need to do anything, as the payment will apply to your new booking as well.

The NPRA does not perform roadworthiness tests. However, a roadworthiness test (or a roadside inspection by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, the police or Norwegian Customs), may reveal defects and deficiencies that require you to have the car tested by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
