What you need to remember
We have made a list of important things to keep in mind when you are deregistering your vehicle.
Important things to consider when deregistering a vehicle
- The vehicle must not be used as from the moment when it is deregistered.
- When a vehicle is deregistered, it will automatically become uninsured.
- Using a vehicle that is uninsured may lead to fines or sanctions, and the owner/driver can become financially liable if the vehicle causes damage.
- The vehicle must be put away safely and locked, and cannot be parked on a street/road, square or other places where the general public has access.
- Anyone who deregisters their vehicle must inform others who also have access to the vehicle that it cannot be used.
- We recommend removing the number plates from the vehicle and storing them in a suitable place, so that no one inadvertently uses your deregistered and uninsured vehicle.
- If the vehicle has two owners and is to be deregistered, both owners must confirm the deregistration within 10 days, either on Your Page or at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. You need to book an appointment before you go to a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
