Taking the theory test
Find information about age limits, languages, list of topics, time available, permitted aids and the number of correct answers needed to pass.
When you arrive at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office, you will have to
- present valid proof of identity
- take a photo for your driving licence in a photo booth
- pay for the photo and theory test – see our fees
You will be sitting in a room with others, answering the questions on a computer.
Language
In addition to Norwegian (Bokmål and Nynorsk), for certain licence categories you can also choose other languages:
- Passenger cars (B): Northern Sami, English, Arabic (MSA), Sorani and Turkish
- Mopeds and motorcycles (AM 146, AM 147, A1, A2 and A): English
- Snowmobiles (S): Northern Sami and English
You can change your language choice at any time during the test.
If you wish to take the theory test in a language other than those mentioned above, you can apply for an interpreter-assisted theory test.
Permitted aids
You are not allowed to bring your own aids, but for some driving licence categories, certain aids are issued at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office:
- Light lorries (C1) and minibuses (D1): calculator, rough sheets and pen or pencil
- Lorries (C, CE) and buses (D): road list marked 'Teoriprøve', calculator, rough sheets for load calculations, and pen or pencil
- Certificates of Professional Competence (all): road list marked 'Teoriprøve', calculator, rough sheets for CPCs, and pen or pencil
If your driving licence category is not mentioned in the list, no aids are permitted.
Do you have special needs?
You can have the questions read aloud in Norwegian using audio support. Ask for headphones at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. You may request extra time to complete the test if you find that you need it. Ask the testing officer about this before time runs out.
If you have other needs beyond these, you can apply for an assisted theory test for special-needs candidates. This may include assistance in understanding the questions, the use of an interpreter or other special needs.

If you pass the test
If you passed the theory test and have completed all training, you can now take your practical driving test. You need to pass the practical driving test within three years of passing the theory test.
If you are getting a driving licence for mopeds (Category AM 146 or AM 147) or snowmobiles (Category S), the theory test is the final test and you do not need to take a practical driving test. If you passed the test, you need to log in and order a driving licence before you can drive. See Status for your applications
If you fail the test
If you fail the theory test, you need to wait two weeks before you can take a new test. If you are taking the theory test for Categories C, CE, D or DE, you need to wait one week.
When you have booked a new theory test and come to take the new test, you will need to show valid proof of identity and pay a new test fee.
