Lost or stolen driving licence
Has your driving licence been lost or stolen? You can report the loss on Your page, and print out a temporary driving permit.
You may also report your driving licence lost or stolen by visiting the police or your nearest Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon). Remember to bring valid proof of identity.
To avoid waiting time, book an appointment if you choose to report the loss at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
Temporary driving permit
A temporary driving permit is valid for 3 months. It may be extended once, with a maximum validity period of six months from the date when you first reported the loss of your driving licence. You can extend your temporary driving permit at Your page or by visiting a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office or the police.
You need to carry your temporary driving permit when you are driving, along with valid proof of identity. The permit is valid for driving in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
Order a new driving licence
Generally, you can order a new driving licence at the earliest four weeks after you reported your licence lost. To do so, you must have permanent residence in Norway.
An exception is made if at least one of your driving entitlements expire within six months, and you wish to renew the entitlement with a health certificate, or have completed the night driving or skidpan driving course. In these cases, you may order a new driving licence immediately.
If you are going to drive in countries outside the Nordic region, or if you can document that you need a new driving licence immediately, you do not have to wait four weeks but may order a new driving licence at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon). In such cases, you will need to provide documentation of your foreign travel plans, and your new driving licence will be mailed to your home address. Usually, you will receive your new licence within ten days.
Have you found your lost driving licence?
- If you find your lost driving licence before having ordered a new one, you must report your driving licence as found/retrieved on Your page and can start using it again.
- If you find your lost driving licence after having ordered a new one, you must hand in the driving licence you reported lost at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon).
Do you know where you left your driving licence?
If you know where you have left your driving licence and know that you will be able to retrieve it at some point, you may report it as misplaced on Your page. You will then be able to print out a temporary driving permit which you can use in the meantime. When you retrieve your driving licence, it will still be valid for use. You will not have to notify us that you have retrieved your driving licence.
If you only need to drive in Norway, and you have downloaded a digital driving licence, you do not need to report your driving licence as misplaced.
Did you lose your driving licence abroad?
If you lose your driving licence while you are in Sweden, Denmark or Finland, you may log in to Your page and report it lost. You will then be able to print out a temporary driving permit which is valid in these countries.
If you are staying in a country other than Sweden, Denmark or Finland, you should also report your driving licence lost on Your page, but the temporary driving permit will not be valid. If required, contact us for information on how to proceed.
Loss of foreign driving licence
If you have a foreign driving licence and it has been lost or stolen, you may have a temporary driving permit issued. You need to obtain documentation of your driving entitlement from the licensing authority in the country of issue and bring this with you to a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon).
