Renewing your driving licence with a new photo
If it has been 15 years since you obtained your driving licence or if you have changed your name, you need to renew it by taking a new photo.
You need to book an appointment at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon) to renew your driving licence with a new photo.
Your physical driving licence card is valid for 15 years from the date when you got it. This is called administrative validity and is independent of the validity of your driving entitlement.
You need to take a new photo for your driving if
- your current photo is no longer valid
- you have changed your name
- you have changed so much that it is difficult to recognise you
Taking a new photo for your driving licence is not restricted to the situations listed above. You may update your photo for any other reason you choose.
Book an appointment at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office
When you need to renew your driving licence with a new photo, you need to book an appointment at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon). You should take the photo in a photo booth before you take a queue ticket. Then you need to sign at the counter.
Do you need to renew your driving licence with a health certificate?
Check how long your photo is valid before you renew your driving licence with a health certificate. If the photo has a shorter validity term than what your new health certificate allows, the photo will limit how long your new driving licence will be valid. You should then take a new photo before you renew your licence.
How to check the validity term of your driving licence
The validity term of your driving licence card is normally found on the front under item 4b. On the back of your driving licence, you will find the validity terms for the different driving entitlements (licence categories). You can also check the digital driving licence app or log in to Your Page.
