How to renew your driving licence
You can renew your driving licence and driving entitlements (licence categories) at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon) or online.
It is cheaper to renew a driving licence online on Your page than at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
We will send you your new driving licence by post, usually within two weeks.
You cannot renew your driving licence on Your Page if
- the photo on your driving licence was taken before 1 January 2012
- you have changed your name
Book an appointment for renewing your driver licence to avoid waiting at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
You need to submit a health certificate if
- you are renewing heavy vehicle licence categories
- you have diabetes and take glucose-lowering medication and you have a driving licence that is valid for more than five years from its date of issue. Read more information for drivers who have diabetes.
- your driving licence has a shorter term of validity due to your health
- you are renewing your driving licence when you are 80 years old or more
You can obtain a health certificate from your doctor after an examination of your health. You do not need to submit a health certificate if you are renewing your driving licence because you have completed the night driving course and/or the safety course on a practice track, or because you have changed your name or need a new photo.
When a health certificate is required
First submit your health certificate
We need the original version of your health certificate. It must not be more than three months old when we receive it.
The term of validity of your new driving licence will be determined based on the date when the health certificate was issued.
You can mail your health certificate to your nearest Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. You can also hand it in yourself.
You can renew your driving licence once we have registered your health certificate
It may take up to a week from the time we receive your health certificate, before it is registered in our systems.
Once we have registered your certificate
- you will receive confirmation by SMS and email
- you can see that it has been registered on Your Page
The term of validity of your new driving licence will be determined based on the date when the health certificate was issued.

You can renew your driving licence on Your Page. Your old driving licence becomes invalid when you order a new driving licence
Destroy your old driving licence
When you renew your driving licence online, you are responsible for destroying your old driving licence. You can also hand it in to a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
Renewal at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office
To avoid waiting at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office, book an appointment for renewing your driver licence.
Bring your health certificate and, if required, an eyesight certificate when you go there. You also need to bring valid proof of identity and your old driving licence. If you need a new photo, you take this at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. There is an extra charge for this.
How to get a temporary driving permit
If you have a digital driving licence, the app will display a temporary driving permit when you have ordered a renewed driving licence. If you do not have a digital driving licence, you can get a temporary driving permit this way:
- If you renew your licence online, you can print out a temporary permit when you have paid for your new licence.
- If you renew your licence at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office, you will be given a temporary permit when you have paid for your new licence.
The temporary driving permit is only valid in Norway.
