Apply for small number plates

To apply for small number plates you need to document either that

• there are physical factors relating to the vehicle that make it difficult to attach and use standard-sized number plates.

or that

• standard-sized number plates interfere with normal use of the car.

Purely aesthetic arguments are not sufficient to be assigned small number plates.

How to apply

You apply by filling in the application form Søknad om tildeling av lite/US-skilt til bil (PDF, Norwegian only). You need to attach documentation that is relevant for your application. If you do not attach documentation, we will have to reject your application. See more about documentation requirements below.

Physical factors relating to the vehicle make it difficult to use standard-sized number plates

You should send us photos showing that there are physical factors relating to the vehicle that make it difficult to attach and use standard-sized number plates. The photos should have high resolution and enable us to assess whether your car meets the criteria.

This is what you should send us photos of:

• Photo of the vehicle from a front oblique angle.
• Photo of the vehicle from a rear oblique angle.
• Photo showing the designated space for the number plate.
• Photo of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) / chassis number.

In the owner’s manual for the car you can find where the VIN / chassis number is located. If it is difficult to take a photo of the VIN, you can log in and book an appointment for a vehicle test and select "Approval and correction of technical data".

Standard-sized number plates interfere with normal use of the car

In order to show that large number plates interfere with normal use of the vehicle, you should send documentation from the vehicle manufacturer or an independent testing body (such as TÜV or DEKRA) in addition to the photos. The documentation should explain why standard-sized number plates interfere with normal use of the car.

If your application is granted

If your application for small number plates / “US plates” is granted, you can order the number plates.

If you already have regular number plates that will not to be used on the car, these must be handed in. Book an appointment before you go to a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon).

Price

The price for one number plate is NOK 60 and the price for a set of two plates is NOK 120.

Delivery time

If the plates need to be ordered, it will take from two to five business days before you can collect your new plates at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
