Is your driving licence valid until you turn 100?
The term of validity of licences issued before 2013 has been shortened. If this applies to your licence, you can see how long it will be valid, here.
How long is your driving licence valid?
If the expiry date on your driving licence is your one hundredth birthday, you can find out here when you will need to have it renewed. Check what applies to your type of licence:
Pink card, bank card sized (EEA models 1 and 2)
If your driving licence was issued between 1 January 1998 and 18 January 2013 (inclusive), you need to renew it by the end of 2032.
If your driving licence was issued on or after 19 January 2013, the expiry date on the back of your driving licence will apply.
Large pink card (Vienna models 1 and 2)
If your driving licence was issued between 1 April 1979 and 31 December 1997 (inclusive), you need to renew it by the end of 2022.
Green driving licences
Green driving licences are no longer valid. Therefore, if you have a green driving licence, you do not have the right to drive until you have it renewed.
Exceptions: If you have normal residence abroad, you cannot be issued with a new Norwegian driving licence. Therefore, if you still meet the health requirements for a driving licence (Helsenorge, in Norwegian), you may use your green driving licence in Norway until you turn 80.
Are you approaching the age of 80?
If you wish to keep your driving licence after you have turned 80, you need to submit a health certificate from your doctor.
How to renew your driving licence
Driving licences issued before 2012
You need to renew your driving licence with a new photo. This can only be done at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon), and you need to book an appointment for renewal.
Driving licences issued between 1 January 2012 and 18 January 2013 inclusive
- Your driving licence will be valid for 15 more years if you renew it with a new photo. This can only be done at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon).
- Your driving licence will have a shorter term of validity if you renew it without getting a new photo. You can do this on Your Page or at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. Your driving licence will then be valid for 15 years from the date when your current driving licence was issued.
