Renewal of heavy vehicle categories
You must renew your licence for heavy vehicle categories every five years. From the age of 66, and in some other cases, you must renew it more often.
"Heavy vehicle categories" refers to lorry (C, CE, C1, C1E), bus (D, DE) and minibus (D1, D1E). You will receive notification three months before your driving entitlement (licence category) expires.
You need to submit a health certificate
You need to submit a valid health certificate before you can renew your driving licence for heavy vehicle categories. You can obtain such a certificate from your doctor. In some cases, you will also need to submit an eyesight certificate from an optometrist or ophthalmologist (eye specialist). Find out from your doctor whether this is necessary.
Send your health certificate to your local driver and vehicle licensing office
We need the original version of your health certificate. It must not be more than three months old when we receive it.
Ask your regular doctor if (s)he can send your health certificate digitally to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. Your certificate will then be registered here as soon as the doctor has sent it.
If your doctor is unable to do so, you can send your health certificate by post to your nearest Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon).
You can also hand it in at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office yourself. You need to book an appointment before you hand in your health certificate yourself.
As soon as we have registered your health certificate, you'll receive an SMS from us informing you of this.
You can renew your driving licence once we have registered your health certificate
It may take up to a week from the time we receive your health certificate, before it is registered in our systems. Once we have registered your certificate
- you will receive confirmation by SMS and email
- you can see that it has been registered on Your Page
The term of validity of your new driving licence will be determined based on the date when the health certificate was issued.

Have you completed the skidpan course after you obtained a driving licence for Category C, D or CE? You can renew your driving licence as soon as your driving school/course organiser has informed us that you have completed the course.
Expired licences for heavy vehicle categories
If your licence includes heavy vehicle categories that have expired, you do not have a driving entitlement for these categories until you have renewed your driving licence.
If you passed a practical driving test when you acquired a driving licence for heavy vehicle categories or later, you can renew your driving licence on Your page or by visiting a driver and vehicle licensing office.

Driving test required for C1 and C1E, which were originally stamped-on entitlements
It was previously possible to get the right to drive a car up to 7,500 kg, also with a trailer, without taking a driving test. This right was acquired as a stamped-on entitlement (“stempelrettighet”). If at a later point you have had this stamped-on entitlement converted to Category C1 or C1E on your driving licence, you can renew these categories with a health certificate for up to five years after the categories have expired. The health certificate must be submitted to and registered with the Norwegian Public Road Administration, and you must have ordered a new driving licence with the renewed Category C1/C1E within five years of the expiry date.
If you do not do this, you will need to submit a health certificate and pass a driving test before the categories can be renewed. If you want to renew both C1 and C1E, you need to pass the test for C1E. However, you do not need to take a driving test if you have passed a test in connection with
- renewing the driving entitlement (licence category)
- having the driving entitlement (licence category) reinstated after your licence was revoked
- upgrading your driving licence to include an equal-level or more comprehensive category
If you only had the entitlement as a stamp on your driving licence
If you had the stamped-on entitlement on your driving licence, you had to renew it to Category C1 or C1E with a health certificate by 1 January 2002. If you did not do this, you lost the entitlement. If you want Category C1 or C1E, you will then have to acquire them the regular way by completing mandatory training and passing all tests.
If you have upgraded from Category C1 to D1
If you have upgraded from Category C1 to Category D1, you passed a practical driving test when you acquired Category D1. Category D1 is equivalent to Category C1, so you do not have to take a driving test to renew Category C1. This applies even if you originally acquired Category C1 without taking a driving test.
If you acquired Category D1E on the basis of C1E without a test
If it has been more than five years since Categories C1E and D1E expired, you will need to pass a driving test in one of these categories before you can renew them.
Length of validity
If you acquired or renewed your licence for a heavy vehicle category after 10 September 2008, it is normally valid for five years.
Exceptions where the driving licences has a shorter term of validity
- If you have reached the age of 70, your driving entitlement (licence category) is valid for one year at a time.
- If you have reached the age of 66, your driving entitlement (licence category) is valid until the day before you turn 71.
- Your driving licence may have a shorter term of validity due to your health.
- Your driving licence will have a shorter term of validity if you have not completed all mandatory training.
