Assisted theory test for special needs candidates

Do you need special assistance to take the theory test? You can apply to take the test orally in a separate room accompanied by an examiner.

Before you apply for assistance

  • You need to have applied for a driving licence first. This can be done on Your Page.
  • You need to present documentation that you need assistance in order to take a theory test. Documentation may be a statement from your regular doctor, a speech therapist, the Educational and Psychological Counselling Service (PPT) or others who can confirm your need for assistance.
  • Have you previously been granted an assisted theory test? You do not need to re-apply if you are upgrading your driving licence to include a new category.

Assistance is also available at the regular (written) theory test

You can ask for headphones and have the questions read out aloud in Norwegian (bokmål). You can also ask for an additional 15 minutes to complete the test. You do not need to apply in advance for this. Read more about the regular theory test.

Who is it for?

An assisted theory test is for those who need special assistance to take the theory test. This may be, for example, if you have reading and writing difficulties or ADHD. You need to present documentation that you need assistance in order to take a theory test.

How the test is carried out

When you take an assisted theory test for special-needs candidates, you take the test orally, in a separate room accompanied by an examiner. The test will be adapted to you and your needs, but the purpose is for the examiner to help you understand the questions and the answer options.  

Taking the test in English

Some Driver and Vehicle Licensing Offices offer assisted theory tests in English.

If you cannot find your local Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office in the list below, you may apply for an  interpreter-assisted theory test with an oral examiner.

If your application concerns ADR, taxi driving or emergency response, you cannot apply on Your Page. You must then apply by filling in an application form on paper and sending it by post. Do not send your application to us by email, as it contains sensitive information about you.
