Driving practice with a motorcycle (A1, A2 and A)

You must have completed the Basic Traffic Course before you can practise driving a motorcycle. Here you can see what other rules apply to learner driving.

When can you practise driving as a learner driver?

Light motorcycle (A1): Age 15
Medium heavy motorcycle (A2): Age 16
Heavy motorcycle (A): Age 22

You cannot have passengers on your motorcycle other than the person supervising you, who is responsible for your driving (your accompanying driver).

In order to be allowed to practise driving in Category A (heavy motorcycle) before you are 22, you need to have a licence for Category A2 motorcycles.

Requirements applying to your accompanying driver

The person accompanying you and who is responsible for your driving

must be at least 25 years old
must have held a licence for the same category you are training in, continuously for the last five years
may ride pillion (on the rear seat of the motorcycle you are riding), if this does not give the motorcycle too heavy a load - check “tillatt nyttelast” (maximum permissible payload) in the Vehicle Registration Certificate
may follow behind you on their own motorcycle while you are practising
may carry a passenger on their own motorcycle, but must first assess whether this will be safe

If the person accompanying you is riding behind you on their own motorcycle, they must ride a two-wheeled motorcycle of the medium or heavy category (A2 or A).

Requirements applying to the motorcycle

In Category A1, you must ride a light motorcycle (cylinder capacity under 125 cm³, power output not exceeding 11 kW).
In Category A2, you must drive a medium heavy motorcycle (engine power not exceeding 35 kW, no more than 0.2 kW per kg of unladen weight).

Where can you practise driving?

On a practice track or a closed-off area you may drive alone when the person accompanying you can see you at all times and give you instructions. If you are practising on the road or other areas that are not closed off, you need someone to accompany you. This accompanying driver can only supervise one learner at a time.

Communication between you and your supervisor

On the road or other areas that are not closed off, your accompanying driver (supervisor) should be able to give you instructions through two-way communication equipment. In shops selling motorcycles, there are various varieties of two-way communication equipment for use during driving practice. You can also use a mobile phone, but this requires that you have additional equipment to ensure that you will not be violating the prohibition against using a handheld mobile phone while driving.

Wear a vest with the letter L on the back

Both you and your accompanying driver must wear a reflective vest with the letter L on the back. The letter L must have a white background.
