Driving practice with a passenger car (B)

You must be at least 16 years old. If you are under 25, you must have completed the Basic Traffic Course to practise driving a passenger car.

You need to bring with you

documentation that you have completed the Basic Traffic Course (learner's permit / provisional driving licence) or a driving licence in another category if you have one
photo ID

If you have reached the age of 25, you are exempt from parts of the Basic Traffic Course and may drive without a learner’s permit.

The person accompanying you

must be at least 25 years old
must have held a licence for the same category you are training in, continuously for the last five years

Information for accompanying drivers

The car

must be marked at the rear with a clearly visible red L on a white background
must have an extra mirror for the person accompanying you. Vehicles that are type-approved with a screen instead of a rear-view mirror may be used as long as the person accompanying you has a sufficient view to the rear
must belong to Category B (maximum authorised mass not exceeding 3,500 kg)

The L-plate

You must only use the L-plate during driving practice, and it must be removed when the practice session is over. The L-plate is an important signal to others that you are undergoing training.

You can print the L-plate with or without colour. If you print it without colour, you must colour it in yourself.

Manual or automatic transmission

You can choose for yourself whether you want to practise driving with manual or automatic transmission. It is important that you are prepared to use the transmission system you will be taking your driving test with.

If you pass your driving test with automatic transmission, your driving licence will have a code showing that you may only drive vehicles with automatic transmission.

Passengers

As a learner driver, you may have passengers in the car during driving practice when you have come far enough in your training for this to be sensible and you feel confident.

Trailer

You may practise driving with a trailer when your driving skills are good enough for this to be sensible.
