FjordX
FjordX is an innovation program led by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, focused on developing lighter, more sustainable constructions.
The program builds on the knowledge and experience gained from the Coastal Highway Route E39 initiative, which pioneered advanced engineering concepts for long-span fjord crossings.
By leveraging lessons from The Coastal Highway Route E39, FjordX explores new materials, modular construction methods, and circular economy principles to reduce climate impact and lifecycle costs.
Several pilot projects showcase this ambition
- Hangarbrua (Trondheim) – the world’s first pedestrian and cycle bridge with a bridge deck made from 100% recycled aluminium, sourced from the decommissioned Gyda oil platform.
- Frønes Bridge (Åfjord) – a steel bridge built using robotic laser-hybrid welding, improving durability and reducing maintenance.
- Ya Bridge (Tynset) and Elverhøy Bridge (Sunndal) – traffic bridges applying advanced welding technology for longer lifespan and cost efficiency.
These projects demonstrate FjordX’s commitment to combining cutting-edge technology with environmental responsibility. FjordX is not just about building bridges—it’s about shaping the next generation of infrastructure through collaboration, innovation, and sustainability.
