Before you can take the test you need to apply for a driving licence. You also need to book an appointment for your theory test.

Apply for a driving licence Log in

You take the theory test at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon).

The easiest way to apply for a driving licence is online at Your page. You may also fill in an application on paper (PDF), and send it to one of our Driver and Vehicle Licensing Offices (DVLOs).

When your application has been registered you may take the theory test.

When you arrive at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon)

At the DVLO, you need to show valid proof of identity and pay for the theory test. When applicable, you also need to have your picture taken and pay for the picture. Please observe that some DVLOs may have limited opening hours for theory tests.

In our test room, you take the theory test on a computer. You can ask for a headset if you would like to have the test questions and possible answers read aloud in Norwegian. In this case, you need to set the language to Norwegian Bokmål.

Theory test language

You can take the theory test for all categories in Norwegian Bokmål. Some classes are also available in other languages:

  • The Category B theory test is available in Nynorsk, Sami, English, Sorani, Arabic (MSA) and Turkish.
  • The Categories AM and T theory tests are available in Nynorsk.
  • The Category A1, A2 and A theory tests are available in English.
  • The Category S theory test is available in Sami.

During the test, you can select your preferred language yourself.

After the theory test

The result of your test will be shown on your computer screen immediately after you have submitted all your answers. You will also receive the result of your test by mail along with a summary of the answers to each topic.

If you need to take a practical driving test you can do it now provided you passed the theory test and have completed all mandatory training. Your training must also be registered in our system.

You can track the progress of your training under Your applications on Your Page. You must pass the practical driving test within 3 years of having passed the theory test.

For the licence categories moped (AM 146 and AM 147) and snowmobile (category S) category, there is no practical driving test.

Theory test for moped (AM) and snowmobile (S)

For the licence categories moped (AM) and snowmobile (S) the theory test is the final test and valid for five years.

Before you take the theory test, the following must be true:

  • You must have completed your mandatory training, and it must be registered in our systems.
  • The police must have approved your conduct history.
  • You must be 16 years or older.

You can see whether your conduct history has been approved under Your applications on Your page.

You need to bring an eyesight or health certificate in the following cases:

  • If your answer to question 1 and 2 were both "Yes", you need to bring an eyesight certificate from an approved optometrist.
  • If your answer to questions 3 to 17 were "Yes", you need to bring a health certificate from a medical doctor.

Age

For most categories, you can take the theory test at the earliest 6 months before you reach the age requirement for the driving licence in question.

For the moped and snowmobile categories, you must meet the age requirement when you take the test. The reason for this is that  the theory test is the final test.

Theory test for special needs candidates

You may apply for an assisted theory test for special needs candidates – if you have difficulties reading and understanding the questions. Such tests are carried out with an examiner present. The examiner will help you understand the questions.

Did you fail the theory test?

After you have seen your result on the computer screen at the end of your test, you can review the questions you answered incorrectly.

If you do not pass the theory test, you have to wait 2 weeks before you can take the test again. When you present yourself for a new test, you once again need to show valid proof of identity and pay for the theory test.
